November 2016 'Gin of the Month' - our members received a bottle of the first distilled batch from Moray Distillery in Elgin, Scotland.
AVVA Gin is an amazingly traditional product from the Speyside area of Scotland, steeped in history that is woven into the production and essence of the Gin.
The first batch produced contains just 200 bottles and each are individually numbered, we suspect the temptation to sample will be too strong but if anyone does resist these could well become collectors items of the future.
AVVA Gin is created with a bespoke copper still made locally - one of few Scottish stills in the region, she is lovingly named Jessie-Jean, or J-J, after the owners Grandmothers.
Avva means respected grand-mother, a respected mother, any old or respectable woman in the Indian language of Dravidian.
In Hebrew it means to overturn or ruin which links the reputation that gin had as ‘Mother’s Ruin’ from the Hogarth era.
AVVA Scottish Gin contains 11 botanicals - Juniper, Rowan, Coriander seed, Angelica Root, Oris Root, Dandelion, Red Clover, Mint, Nettle and Lemon & Orange peels.
Many of these are locally sourced from Speyside including the red clover, rowan and nettle.
We are honoured to have this as our second 'Gin of the Month' and with Scotland at the heart of Gin production across the world we feel this is a fitting addition to our aim to provide high quality craft gin for our members.
Moray Distillery have embedded the history of the area and the strong tradition of Scottish Gin production into the very ether of the product, hand distilled gin is often being replaced by industrial scale production and automation, losing what we might traditionally label as a craft gin status.
Each batch is created by owner and distiller Jill who has the passion for the product and it's roots radiating from her and demonstrates an infectious love for the production when you chat to her about the gin and it's development. Seeing this excitement and care for a craft gin was something that sealed our decision to make AVVA Gin our members choice for November.
The rose window design on the AVVA Gin bottle reflects what the now derelict window may have looked like in the local Elgin Cathedral, central to history and links with the areas heritage.
The team from Moray Distillery worked with local designers to create the graphic to be featured within the label of each bottle.
Both the AVVA Gin Spirit and the dedication to creating a truly hand distilled and historically related product have come together to make this an excellent addition to the world of craft gin.
