  • Commonwealth Games 2018

The Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth nations.  During the 21st Games being held in Australia's Gold Coast, 5,000  athletes will compete in more than 18 different sports and more than 275 events.

The Games were first held in 1930 in Hamilton, Ontario and have taken place every four years since (except during World War 2).  Canadian triple jumper, Gordon Smallacombe, won the first ever gold medal in the history of the games.

The Games were known as the British Empire Games from 1930-1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954-1966 and the British Commonwealth Games from 1970-1974.

Nine Nations have hosted the Commonwealth Games; that's 18 cities in seven countries. Australia has hosted the most Games - five in 1938, 1962, 1982, 2006 and 2018, whilst Canada has hosted four times - 1930, 1953, 1978 and 1994.

Auckland (1950 and 1990) and Edinburgh (1970 and 1986) are the only two cities to have hosted the Games twice.

Only six countries have attended every Commonwealth Games, Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. Australia has been the highest achieving team on 12 occasions, England seven and Canada one.

Although there are 53 members of the commonwealth nations, 71 teams participate in the Commonwealth Games, as a number of dependent territories compete under their own flags.

The four Home Nations of the United Kingdom - England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales also send separate teams.  Who will you be supporting out on the sunny Gold Coast?
